The 82nd Tour de France took place from July 1st to 23rd, 1995 and covered 20 stages over 3635 km. 189 racing drivers took part in the tour, of which 115 were classified.
In 1995, Miguel Indurain celebrated his 5th and final overall victory on the Tour. In the run-up to the race, a number of drivers were counted among the favorites to win. There were various athletes who were equally known as good mountain climbers and time trialists. Again, the Swiss Tony Rominger , who had previously won the Giro d'Italia , was one of them; likewise his compatriot Alex Zülle , plus Bjarne Riis , Jewgeni Berzin and Laurent Jalabert .
Race course
Perhaps that was the reason for a surprising premature attack on the part of last year's Spanish winner. On the 7th stage, which led through the Ardennes, Indurain tried to break away and was able to get a small lead ahead of the competition. The only one who was able to follow in this attack was Johan Bruyneel , who was then able to put on the Maillot Jaune as the stage winner . After the individual time trial on the following day, Indurain was the overall leader in yellow.
But even on the subsequent stage to La Plagne , this lead was in serious danger when Alex Zülle drove several minutes ahead on a solo trip through the Alps . Indurain and his team Banesto had to fend off another attack on stage 12 when Laurent Jalabert drove away in the Massif Central . During the stage he was also in possession of the "virtual" yellow jersey at times, so he had a bigger lead over the main field with the leader than the leader in the overall standings. With the help of other teams, who in turn also pursued their own interests, Indurain managed to defend his leadership.
On the Pyrenees stage to Crêtes du Lys there was then the fatal accident of Fabio Casartelli , who fell on the descent from the Col du Portet d'Aspet at high speed. Richard Virusque single-handedly won the stage , who declared his jubilation at the finish line by saying that he had not heard of the fatal accident. The following stage then became the funeral journey for the casualty.
The following 17th stage was won by Erik Zabel . On the 18th section, an escape group formed early on, from which Lance Armstrong then attacked a few kilometers from the goal. He won the stage and at the finish line raised his arms up in a memorable gesture and clearly pointed to the sky. “Fabio, this victory is for you!” Commented Peter Woydt live on Eurosport . Armstrong was Casartelli's teammate on the Motorola team .

1 The drivers converted the stage into a commemorative drive in honor of Fabio Casartelli, who died in a mass fall the day before. The field then stopped before the finish and let Casartelli's teammates cross the finish line first. All the prizes awarded for this stage were made available to Casartelli's family.
