The 56th Tour de France took place from June 28th to July 20th, 1969. 130 racing drivers took part in the tour , of which 86 were classified. The move away from the national teams has continued to this day, Eddy Merckx won the tour , which was again carried out with branded teams .

Race course

When it first took part, Merckx not only won the overall ratings, but also all the other important ratings of the tour: the green jersey , the mountain rating , and the combined rating introduced last year.

Rudi Altig won the prologue , so the German was able to drive you the following stage in the yellow jersey .

On the sixth stage of the Ballon d'Alsace , Merckx was able to win his first tour stage and take the overall lead. He won five more stages in the course of the tour: one in the Alps , one in the Pyrenees , the shorter time trials at Revel and Divonne-les-Bains, and the final time trial to Paris. In the Pyrenees stage he won, Merckx attacked the Col du Tourmalet and, after a solo escape of more than 130 km, was the stage winner with an advantage of around eight minutes.

In Paris, Merckx was almost 18 minutes ahead of runner-up Roger Pingeon , the 1967 winner , who won a stage. His compatriot Raymond Poulidor took third place overall.

After the tour, Merckx's dominance was dubbed “Merckxissimo” by Tour Director Jacques Goddet , while Merckx's team-mate Christian Raymond called him a “cannibal”.
