The 1906 Tour de France took place from July 4 to 29, with at least one day of rest between two stages. The overall winner was not determined based on the driving time, but according to a points system. For the first time, the rouge flame was used, which shows the last kilometer of a stage.

Race course

The number of stages was increased again, from 11 to 13. The length of the individual stages was increased significantly; the tour was more than half longer than a year earlier. The long stages took their toll: of the 76 riders who started, only 14 reached the finish in Paris. For the first time the tour made a detour abroad; short sections led through Germany , Italy and Spain .

The race was won by René Pottier , who is considered the tour's first mountain specialist. He laid the foundation for success at the Ballon d'Alsace , where he shook off all competitors and finally arrived in Dijon with a margin of 47 minutes .
