The 88th Tour de France took place from July 7th to 29th 2001 and ran over 3453 km in 20 stages. 189 racing drivers took part, of which 144 were classified. The end result of this event was almost exactly the same as on the previous Tour 2000 : Armstrong won confidently ahead of Jan Ullrich and Joseba Beloki , and Erik Zabel also won the green jersey again for the sixth and last time.

On October 22, 2012, the UCI World Cycling Federation announced the cancellation of all Armstrong titles since August 1, 1998, including all of the American's Tour de France successes. Successors to first place were not used.

Race course

In the first days of the tour, mass sprints and successful breakaway attempts alternated. The best sprinter was clearly Erik Zabel , who was able to win three stages in what is perhaps the best year of his career (including overall victory in the cycling world cup ). Laurent Jalabert (2 × and winner of the mountain classification) and Jens Voigt were able to achieve stage wins from small groups . Voigt had already been able to put on the yellow jersey for one day. On the 8th stage from Colmar to Pontarlier , however, the decisive attack by a breakaway group took place: In pouring rain, 14 riders crossed the finish line sensationally with over half an hour ahead of all favorites. The rest of the tour was shaped by Armstrong, Ullrichs & Co.'s efforts to make up for this deficit. In the end, the best drivers in this group, Kazakh Andrei Kiwiljow and Frenchman François Simon , finished fourth and sixth. Also in the breakaway group was Stuart O'Grady , who took the lead in the points classification with a fifth place and only had to hand it over to Erik Zabel on the final stage.

Lance Armstrong initially seemed to suffer significantly on the first difficult stage in the Alps and was long at the end of the leading group. Before the final climb to L'Alpe d'Huez , the American put an end to his remarkable bluff and, as in previous years, attacked with his irresistibly fast cadence . In a sensational moment that went down in tour history as the look , he glanced back and then drove everyone away. Armstrong also won the following mountain time trial and at the end of the tour had four stage wins. Jan Ullrich fought to the last mountain, although he was clearly inferior to him as in the previous year: In the Pyrenees, he crashed spectacularly on a downhill run at high risk, but was able to continue the race despite an injury.
