The 77th Tour de France took place from June 30th to July 22nd, 1990 and ran over 3504 kilometers on 21 stages. 198 racing drivers took part in the tour, of which 156 were classified.
Race course
The first stage around the Futuroscope amusement park was dominated by a group of four who reached the finish line with a lead of almost ten minutes. The outcome of this first stage had a significant impact on the tour: The Dutchman Frans Maassen won the stage, stage third Steve Bauer slipped into the yellow jersey of the front runner , who was able to defend it until he reached the Alps on the ninth stage. There it was taken over by the Frenchman Ronan Pensec , who also benefited from the lead he gained on the first stage. However, he could only defend the lead for two days, then it went on to the Italian Claudio Chiappucci , fourth of the breakaway group on day one.
In the individual time trial on the penultimate day, the American Greg Lemond got over two minutes on Chiappucci and pushed him out of the frontrunner role. The last stage, in which Johan Museeuw triumphed on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, didn't change anything in the overall standings: Lemond won his third tour with an average speed of 38.621 km / h ahead of the then unknown Chiappucci.
In the fight for the green jersey , Olaf Ludwig prevailed against Museeuw. The German also won the eighth stage in Besançon in the sprint. The polka-dot jersey was won by Frenchman Thierry Claveyrolat .
