Niki Rüttimann

Niklaus "Niki" Rüttimann (born August 18, 1962 in Untereggen ) is a former Swiss cyclist .

Niki Rüttimann started cycling at the age of 14. In 1979 he became Swiss junior champion in road racing, in 1980 and 1981 national runner-up in the mountain championship. In 1982 Rüttimann won the Grand Prix Guillaume Tell , and the following year he achieved one of his greatest successes when he was runner-up in the world championship for amateurs in road races, behind the German Uwe Raab . In the same year he also won the Tour of Eastern Switzerland .

In 1984 Niki Rüttimann, who was considered a brilliant tactician, switched to the professionals and initially drove for three years for the La Vie Claire team , which u. a. Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond belonged to. In the same year he was first of the Clásica San Sebastián . In 1985 Rüttimann won Paris – Bourges , 1986 the Route du Sud and the Etoile de Bessèges , 1989 Annemasse – Bellegarde et back and came second in the Swiss road race championship. In 1990 he finished third in the national championship in cyclo-cross racing .

Niki Rüttimann also started in the big tours , seven times in the Tour de France alone . In 1984 he was eleventh in the overall ranking and third in the ranking for the white jersey , in 1985 he was 13th, in 1986 seventh and also won a stage. At the Tour de Suisse in 1985 he finished second overall and in 1988 tenth. In 1986 he finished ninth in the overall ranking of the Giro d'Italia .

Since retiring from cycling in 1990, Niki Rüttimann has been running the family farm in Untereggen. His son Eric is a successful runner.
