Dierk Henningsen

Dierk Henningsen (born September 12, 1935 in Kiel ) is a German geologist .

Life

Henningsen went to the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Kiel and studied geology in Kiel, at the Free University of Berlin and at the Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen , where he received his doctorate in 1961 on sub-carbonic Grauwacken in the Lahn valley (especially the area around Gießen) and himself Habilitation in 1965. As a post-doctoral student he did a research stay in Costa Rica and taught in Giessen and Hanover (New Hampshire) (USA). In 1970 he became a professor at the University of Cologne and from 1971 he was professor at the Leibniz University in Hanover , where he retired in 2001.

Henningsen mainly dealt with sedimentary rocks, regional geology (especially Germany) and in Hanover also focused on training civil engineers and engineering geologists. His book on the geology of Germany is a standard work.

In 2006 he received the Hans Stille Medal . From 1991 to 1993 he was chairman of the German Geological Society (DGG) and organized its general meeting in Hanover in 1987.
