Uwe Raab (born July 26, 1962 in Lutherstadt Wittenberg , Halle district , GDR ) is a former German road cyclist and world champion in cycling.
Athletic career
Raab started cycling in 1973 at BSG Chemie Piesteritz. In 1976 he moved to SC DHfK Leipzig. In 1983 he became the UCI world champion in the amateur road race . In the same year he was voted GDR athlete of the year . He was unable to take part in the 1984 Summer Olympics because of the boycott of the GDR . At the 1986 World Cup , he won bronze in the 100 km team drive and was fourth in the individual race. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , he finished 23rd in the road race.
From 1983 to 1989 he took part in the International Peace Tour seven times and won eight stages, three in 1983 alone. Uwe Raab started for the SC DHfK Leipzig during his GDR days and trained with Klaus Ampler . After reunification he was one of the first GDR athletes to gain a foothold as a professional cyclist: first from 1990 to 1992 for the Dutch team PDM , later from 1993 to 1995 for the Telekom team . He took part in the Tour de France (1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994), the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España . His most important successes in the professional field include two stage wins at Tirreno-Adriatico in 1992 and 1993. He was also successful at the Vuelta in 1990 and 1991. In these two years he won the jersey of the driver with the best points and four stages. Raab completed an apprenticeship as a motor vehicle mechanic. After the end of his sports career, he became the sporting director of the Nuremberg cycling team . In Dessau-Roßlau he runs a cycling shop with his business partner Thomas Siegel (nickname Tomek). In 2007 he became head of the Wittenberg Cycling Days.

In 1984 and 1986 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit.
Private
Raab is married and has two children.
In the course of the Team Telekom doping affair , he made the following comments at the end of May 2007: “Yes, the team management approached me. When I refused, I was out of the window, my career sealed. "
