In 1967 he was thanks to a large number of good placements, especially in the selection races of the cycling association, first on the annual best list of the GDR cycling association for road riders. In addition to the International Peace Tour, which he did three times and twice won the rating of the best climber, he made tours of Algeria , Bulgaria , Yugoslavia and Poland . He was active for a total of 15 years. Gonschorek was very popular in the field of drivers due to his calm, level-headed manner, he was considered a very helpful driver for the team. In 1968 his career was almost over when he collided with a pedestrian and suffered serious injuries while training at a speed of 70 kilometers per hour. The fall and the subsequent rehabilitation cost him the entire 1968 season, including the chance to start at the Olympic Games . In 1972, at the last moment, he was able to drive to the Summer Olympics in Munich for the sick Michael Milde . Due to an unfortunate training control in advance and a fall during the competition, he was unable to achieve his usual performance in the road race and did not finish the race. He himself regarded this experience as his greatest sporting defeat. Gonschorek was bid farewell to his competitive sports career in February 1975 on the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle track in Berlin and was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor of the GDR Cycling Association. After leaving the ASK Vorwärts, he was still active for a while for the BSG Aufbau Centrum Leipzig and mainly drove stayer races .
