Athletic career

Tanneberger drove his first men's races for SG Dynamo Zwickau. At the Harz Mountain Prize in 1959 he came in seventh for the first time in a national race in the top ten. In 1960 he narrowly missed a victory several times, but was on the podium in four GDR-wide races with two second and two third places. For the 1961 racing season, Tanneberger moved to SG Dynamo Dresden-Nord and competed in his first major stage races . As a member of the GDR national team, he started the Tour of Poland , where he finished 47th. For the Dynamo sports association he took part in the GDR tour , which he finished 19th. By 1966 he took part in the GDR tour a total of five times, but never made it into the top ten, even though he managed to win a stage in 1962.

Apart from his stage victory, Tanneberger only made a name for himself in 1962 with a second place at the Volksstimme Prize in Karl-Marx-Stadt . In a ranking of road riders published by the GDR Cycling Association , he came in 24th. From 1963 he was a member of the SC Karl-Marx-Stadt . He started in several one-day circuit races, of which he won a 60 km circuit in Karl-Marx-Stadt . The GDR cycling association used Tanneberger again on the international tour of Bulgaria , but he retired early. In the best list of 1963 he landed this time on 20th place. Tanneberger had his most successful year in 1964. He was GDR road driver champion and won the GDR mountain championship and was also able to make a name for himself in the national team. At the tour of Czechoslovakia, he finished sixth as the best GDR driver.

In 1965 and 1966 Tanneberger was one of the candidates for the three-country stage race Internationale Friedensfahrt , but he could not prevail in the elimination races. When he last played in the national team, he won a stage in the 1965 Tour of Austria , but after the seventh stage he was disqualified "for using illegal means" ( Neues Deutschland from June 4, 1965). Until then, as the best GDR driver, he was eighth in the overall standings and led the mountain classification. Tanneberger again proved his strength on the mountain at the GDR mountain championship in 1965, when he became runner-up. He celebrated his last notable victory in the 1966 season at the 158-kilometer road race “Prize of Agricultural Engineering” in Gersdorf near Kamenz .
