Thilo Fuhrmann

Thilo Fuhrmann (born March 3, 1955 in Pirna ) is a former German cyclist.

Athletic career

Thilo Fuhrmann began his active career as a cyclist with BSG Lok Pirna and came to ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder), one of the eight cycling centers in the GDR , via the SG Dynamo Dresden station .

His greatest successes as a road driver were the two GDR championship titles in road races in 1977 and 1978 . He also won the title with his club in the team time trial over 100 kilometers in 1978 (with Ulrich Borrmann, Detlef Kletzin and Andreas Vierke). In this line-up, the team also won the Club Cup in 1978 with a new record for club teams.

In 1977 he won individual races around Großwaltersdorf and around Langenau. In 1978 he won the Rund um die Dresdener Heide (in fact on his home training ground). In the same year he was nominated for participation in the road world championship . There he was 51 in the individual race.

After that, his career suffered an abrupt break. At the beginning of 1979 he was banned for several months as the reigning GDR champion and candidate for the International Peace Tour and excluded from his sports club. The selection drivers Peter Koch and Siegbert Schmeißer were also affected by the ban . Incidentally, in contrast to the usual procedures, the ban was not published in the cycling association body and was not mentioned in the press. The background was that Fuhrmann had allegedly committed a "foreign exchange offense" during a training visit to Poland by privately exchanging Polish zlotys . After the ban had expired, Fuhrmann was no longer allowed to start in the performance class and was only allowed to compete in races that were reserved for drivers of the company sports associations (i.e. the actual amateur class). In 1979, Wolfgang Lötzsch also returned to racing after his suspension, but only at the BSG level. Although according to the rules of the German Cycling Association of the GDR at that time, the 20 best BSG riders would have been granted the right to start in the performance class, this right to start has now been revoked for fear of victories by Lötzsch against the GDR elite. Fuhrmann was now also affected.

He initially joined the BSG Kraftverkehr Frankfurt (Oder) and drove for a few years in other communities ( TSG Gröditz , TSV Heidenau, SG Dynamo Dresden, BSG Motor Weimar ). In the competition class of the so-called BSG drivers, he regularly took top places in the annual rankings (e.g. 2nd place behind Wolfgang Lötzsch in 1982) and won a large number of races. In the 1993 season he started in the team of the SC DHfK Leipzig in the cycling Bundesliga.

Personal

During his active time as a BSG athlete, Fuhrmann built up a cycling business in Pirna, which he still operates today.
