Axel Hermann Peschel (born August 2, 1942 in Maasdorf ( Elbe-Elster district , today Brandenburg )) is a former German racing cyclist .

Athletic career

Axel Hermann Peschel was born on August 2, 1942, to Otto and Else Peschel. In 1968 he married Petra Stahn. From this marriage he has two children, Uwe and Claudia. He began his sporting career in 1958 with activist Plessa ( Bad Liebenwerda ), was a sports soldier with Dynamo Dresden Nord from 1961-63 and from June 1963 an amateur with SC Dynamo Berlin .

From 1965 to 1971 he took part in the International Peace Race six times and won it in 1968, as well as four times at the UCI World Championships in road races from 1966 to 1970. He won GDR championship jerseys in the mountain time trial , 100 km team time trial , individual road trial and in the criterion race . He finished the GDR tour in 1965 and 1967 as the overall winner. In 1969 he won "Rund um Sebnitz" and 1970 "Berlin-Angermünde-Berlin" and in 1971 he was second in the GDR road championship and seventh in the overall ranking of the GDR tour.

Professional

He trained as an electrician. After the end of his active career in 1971, he made up the Abitur at the evening school (1972-74), in order to then complete a distance learning course at the DHfK Leipzig (qualified sports teacher, 1975-1980). From 1972 to 1975 he was the technical director of the cycling section and from 1975 to 1991 as a trainer at SC Dynamo Berlin . After the reunification he trained as a sports manager (1992–1993) and worked from 1993 to 2005 as a social worker for youth work at the Berlin State Sports Association . Today Axel Peschel lives in Berlin-Weißensee .

family

His son Uwe Peschel was also a cyclist, GDR time trial champion and became Olympic champion with the street four in 1992 .

Honors

In 1968, Axel Peschel was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver for winning the Peace Tour.
