Jan Veselý (born June 17, 1923 in Plástovice , † February 10, 2003 in Prague , Czech Republic ) was a Czechoslovak cyclist .

Cycling career

A friend of his father's took him to Prague. There he learned the bakery trade. As was customary at that time (1939), he drove fresh baked goods to customers every morning - by bicycle. His cycling career began in 1940 with the Prague baker's cycling championship. He won it - as a 17-year-old apprentice.

This was followed by membership in a Prague cycling club ( Sparta Prague ), where he was given a bike because he was already valued as talented.

After the war he won another race and also left the professional and participant in the Tour de France Otokar Rozvoda behind. He drove the peace voyage from 1948 to 1957 as captain of the Czechoslovak crew. In 1957 he had to end the race prematurely due to severe back pain, which resented the local officials. He was no longer nominated for foreign starts. Vesely was very versatile and won a total of 26 national titles in road racing , the team time trial in the mountain time trial , in cross-country race and even the pacemaker race . Jan Veselý is the record winner in Europe's longest and oldest road race for amateurs , Prague – Karlovy Vary – Prague , which he won eight times between 1947 and 1955.

At the age of 34 he ended his career and continued to work as a taxi driver and transport driver. At the age of 79 he died of cancer in Prague.

Private

He had a close friendship with Täve Schur , whose first son got his first name - Jan Schur .
