Vlastimil Moravec

Vlastimil Moravec (born May 7, 1949 in Nové Město nad Metují , † April 15, 1986 in Brno ) was a Czechoslovak cyclist .

Athletic career

Moravec started cycling in Dobruška and later moved to Dukla Brno , the largest Czechoslovak cycling club. He took part in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . He finished 13th in both the road race and the team time trial.

When he won the International Peace Drive in 1972, he was only two seconds ahead of Vladislav Nelyubin in the end result . This was the tightest overall result in the history of the race.

In 1981 he left Dukla Brno and ended his active career in 1985. He then became a coach at Dukla Brno.

On returning from training, Moravec collided with a truck that briefly blocked the entire road during a turning maneuver. Moravec died from the consequences of the accident. He had married his 2nd wife 10 days earlier, who was five months pregnant. A memorial stone commemorates Moravec at the site of the accident.
