Jan Smolík (born December 24, 1942 in Lipník nad Bečvou ) is a former Czech cyclist .

Athletic career

Smolík's greatest success was winning the International Peace Tour in 1964. The following year he won the “ Grand Prix de l'Humanité ”, a French stage race organized by the communist newspaper L'Humanité . However , like all other Czechoslovak racing drivers until 1989, Smolík was not allowed to take part in the Tour de France . In 1967 he came third in the “ Tour of Austria ”. In 1963 he won the traditional Prague – Karlovy Vary – Prague race (the longest European road race for amateurs at 262 kilometers).

In 1964, Smolík took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo and finished 71st in the street race. Four years later, at the Games in Mexico City , he finished 23rd. In 1966, Smolik won the Warsaw Pact Army Sports Club championship .

Professional

Jan Smolík was a trained construction technician , but after completing his military service as a professional soldier, he stayed in the sports department of “Dukla Brno ”.
