3 | POLE | Janusz Kierzkowski | 1: 04.63 min |
For Jan Kierzkowski there was an Italian flag instead of the Polish flag at the award ceremony; the organizing committee may have overlooked the fact that the Italian Gianni Sartori had just been relegated to fourth place by this Pole. In any case, it was the second incorrect flag after the Australian flag had already been raised on October 16 at the same ceremony for the women's pentathlon for Austria's Liese Prokop.

33 riders started the 4000 m single pursuit. Jiří Daler , the Olympic champion from 1964, failed as 13th in the qualification. The medals were won by Daniel Rebillard , Mogens Frey and Xaver Kurmann . The 19-year-old winner Rebillard took third place in the qualification, eliminated Rupert Kratzer in the quarterfinals and the Australian John Bylsma in the semifinals and defeated the Dane Morgan Frey in the final.
4000 m team pursuit
The German four-man was disqualified in the final because the German driver Jürgen Kißner had touched a teammate. This was rated as "unauthorized pushing" because the French text of the competition regulations valid at the time does not differentiate between pushing and pushing (French: 'pousser'). The Italian team, which was to be given the silver medal instead of the German team, initially refused to take part in the award ceremony in protest of the jury's decision. In 1969 the IOC executive decided to hand over the silver medals to the BDR foursome despite being disqualified. See also: Scandal in Mexico 1968
