At the XVII. Six cycling competitions were held at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome .

The railway competitions were held on the newly built Velodromo Olimpico in the EUR district. The Velodrome was built by Cesare Lingini , Dagoberto Ortensi and Silvano Ricci for the Olympic Games and held 17,600 spectators. The plans for the wooden railway came from the Münster specialist Herbert Schürmann .

There were 12 laps to be covered on a 14.615 km long circuit in the Flaminio district. Trapè and Kapitonow broke away from the leading group four laps before the end. Kapitonow started a sprint after eleven laps and crossed the finish line jubilantly, one lap early. But even one lap later he was able to beat Trapè by the width of a tire.

Start on August 26th at 9.00 a.m.
Start and finish were opposite the Velodrome. Three times there were 16.6 kilometers there and back on the Viale Cristofero Colombo motorway towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. During the race, the thermometer rose to 40 ° in the shade, with little shade to be found on the highway. The time of the third driver of each team was counted for the placement.
In the third lap, the Danish four gave up after Knud Enemark Jensen fell unconscious from his bike. Jensen died in hospital, the cause of death was given as a brain injury that Jensen sustained in a fall as a result of heat stroke. It was found that Jensen had taken methamphetamine and pyridile carbinol .
