Dieter Gieseler

Dieter Gieseler (born January 10, 1941 in Münster , † February 8, 2008 in Amelunxen ) was a cyclist from the Federal Republic of Germany . He won the silver medal in the 1000-meter time trial at the 1960 Olympic Games .

Athletic career

Gieseler came to cycling through his brother Edi , who had been a professional cyclist since October 1st, 1954 and competed in the six-day races. Dieter Gieseler was trained by Gustav Kilian . In 1960 he became German champion in the 1000 meter time trial. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, he set a personal best of 1: 08.75 minutes. He won the silver medal behind the Italian Sante Gaiardoni , who set a new world record in 1: 07.27 minutes. For winning this medal he received the silver laurel leaf on December 9, 1960 .

Gieseler was a professional cyclist from 1962 to 1967, his best placement was a second place at the German Track Cycling Championship in 1967. He also won numerous two-man team rides with Gustav "Gussi" Kilian, the son of the national coach.

After a long illness, Gieseler died on February 8, 2008 and was buried in his hometown of Amelunxen.

Professional

While still active, he and his brother had built up a professional future in fruit growing.
