Jens Glücklich (born July 10, 1966 in Cottbus ) is a former German track cyclist and world champion in cycling .

Athletic career

He won his first national title in July 1982 in Leipzig at the GDR Championships in the Youth B class in the 500-meter time trial and sprint. In 1984 Jens Glücklich became Junior World Champion in the 1000 meter time trial in Caen , his favorite discipline, on the track. At the world championship he also won the bronze medal in the sprint . A year later he was able to defend his title in Italy . Another year later he had a successful entry into the men's class when he immediately won the bronze medal in his specialty at the World Championships in Colorado Springs . In 1987 he also won his first competition within the European Cup when he won the Tbilisi Grand Prix in the time trial.

1985 and 1989 he was amateur world champion over the 1000 meters; in addition, he was able to achieve second and third places at world championships in this discipline several times. In total, he won ten medals at world rail championships. In addition, Glücklich, who drove for SC Cottbus , was twice GDR time trial champion.

At his only Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 , he finished fourth in the 1000 m time trial. At the end of his career, Jens Glücklich, called “Happy”, was runner-up at the 1994 World Track Championships in Palermo in a tandem race with Emanuel Raasch .

Professional

Today (as of 2019) Jens Glücklich runs a tanning salon and a fashion store in Cottbus.

Honors

In 1986 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold.

Private

Jens Glücklich has two sons. Until his death he had an intensive friendship with Lothar Thoms , with whom he trained for years.
