Arnaud Tournant (born April 5, 1978 in Roubaix ) is a former French cyclist . He is an Olympic champion and has been world champion in track cycling 14 times .

Cycling career

In 1996 Tournant became European Junior Champion in the track sprint and in the 1000-meter time trial . At the Junior World Championship in 1996 he finished second in the sprint. He has been a member of the Équipe Cofidis since it was founded in 1997 . In 1997 he won his first world title in the adult class in the team sprint. In 1998 he won his first individual title in the time trial. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he won the team sprint together with Laurent Gané and Florian Rousseau .

In 2001 Tournant won three gold medals at the World Railroad Championships in Antwerp . In the same year he set a world record in the 1000-meter time trial in La Paz , Bolivia, in 58.875 seconds . However, this time was favored by the thin mountain air in La Paz. At the 2004 Olympic Games , Tournant won silver in the time trial and bronze in the team sprint together with Mickaël Bourgain and Laurent Gané.

After the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , where Tournant won the silver medal in the team sprint together with Grégory Baugé , Kévin Sireau and Mickaël Bourgain , he retired from active cycling.

Tournants coach was the former world railroad champion Gérard Quintyn . Tournant is 1.80 meters tall, his competition weight was 88 kilograms.

Professional

Until the end of 2010, Arnaud Tournant was the sporting director of the Cofidis track team . He then became project manager for the construction of the new, covered Vélodrome Couvert Régional Jean Stablinski in Roubaix, of which he became head after it opened in 2011. In September 2014 it was announced that Tournant had given up this role and will be leaving Roubaix.

Tournant moved to Montpellier in 2015 and worked in the security company of the club president of HSC Montpellier , Louis Nicollin , until his death in 2017 . He also commented on broadcasts of track cycling competitions on French television.

In spring 2020 Tournant opened a fitness studio in his home town of Roubaix together with a professional trainer. He also announced that he would run for the local city council on the UDI 's list.

Honors

On November 14, 2008 Tournant was accepted into the Ordre national du Mérite .
