Thorvald Ellegaard , actually Thorvald Christian Christiansen , (born March 7, 1877 in Fangel Sogn , Funen ; † April 27, 1954 in Charlottenlund, Gentofte ) was a Danish cyclist .
Athletic career
Thorvald Ellegaard is one of the greatest athletes in Denmark. From 1895 to 1898 the “Flieger” (today: Sprinter ) drove races as an amateur; In the beginning he trained in the " Grazer Training School" of Alexander Gayer .
From 1898 to 1926 Ellegaard was active as a professional and was six times world champion in the sprint. In total, he achieved no less than 875 victories on 153 different cycle tracks in Europe, North America and Australia. Twice, in 1901 and 1911, he won the sprint classic Grand Prix de Paris and three times, in 1903, 1907 and 1912, the Grand Prix de l'UVF . Since he was very popular in Germany, he was hired in 1910 for a daily fee of 1,000 Reichsmarks for the Berlin six-day race , but had to give up (as a sprinter) after three days, completely exhausted. The outbreak of World War I ended his international cycling career, but after the war he continued to compete in national races.
On September 26, 1926, at the age of 49, he said goodbye to his racing career in Copenhagen and for a short time was sports director at the Ordrup cycle track . Ellegaard spent the last years of his life in Paris, where he had already lived during his active time as a cyclist. Thorvald Ellegaard was the father of France Ellegaard (1912–1999), one of the most famous pianists in Scandinavia. In 2015, the cycling track named after him was inaugurated in Odense .
