In the sprint , Nakano was looking for a new challenge on the international stage. In 1977 he won the world championship in the professional sprint for the first time . He was able to defend this title nine times in a row until 1986, making him the most successful sprinter to date.

He himself started in 1990 in front of a home crowd at a UCI World Championship in Keirin and in 1991 , but could not win a medal. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , where Keirin was part of the Olympic program for the first time, he acted as a pacemaker .
