Gary Neiwand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gary Malcolm Neiwand (born September 4, 1966 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian track cyclist , two-time world champion and multiple medalist at the Olympic Games .

Career

From the late 1980s to the end of his career in 2002, Gary Neiwand was considered one of Australia's greatest talents in track sprint and keirin due to his enormous acceleration speed . Several times he won the gold medal in his supreme discipline at the Commonwealth Games .

Neiwand won his first bronze medal in 1988 in Seoul at the 1988 Olympic Games in the sprint. Over the years two silver medals ( 1992 ) and another bronze medal in the team sprint followed . He was also world champion in track sprint.

After retiring from active racing, Gary Neiwand made a number of comeback attempts , which were however negated by alcohol and depression .

Imprisonment for stalking

In February 2006, Neiwand was sentenced to four months in prison for approaching his ex-wife, with whom he has two children, despite a court order. On August 29, 2006, he was sentenced in Sydney to 18 months in prison for molesting his ex-girlfriend Amanda Lamont, her mother, boss and employees, as well as for theft . The presiding judge Ian Gray certified Neiwand manifest depression disorders after the end of his sporting career, which could not excuse his stalking through terrorist calls with partly stolen cell phones . His defense lawyers attributed his depression to his 2005 breakup with his ex-wife. After nine months in prison, he was released early in 2007 and since then has campaigned for the Wayne Schwass's Sunrise Foundation to present the topic of depression in a publicly understood manner .
