Sam Webster (born July 16, 1991 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand track cyclist . Alongside Ethan Mitchell and Edward Dawkins , he is the dominant New Zealand athlete in the short-term events on the track in the 2000s and 2010s; The three drivers are also successful internationally, often together.

Athletic career

In 2007, Sam Webster finished first in the junior team sprint at the Oceania Track Championships , with Sam Steele and Ethan Mitchell . At the Junior Track World Championships in Moscow in 2009 he won three titles: in the sprint , in the keirin and in the team sprint, together with Mitchell and Cameron Karwowski .

At the UCI Track World Championships in Minsk in 2013 , Webster was runner-up in the team sprint together with Ethan Mitchell and Edward Dawkins , and the three drivers became world champions in this discipline the following year at the Track World Championships in Cali . He won gold in the sprint at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow .

In 2016 Sam Webster was nominated for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . Together with Edward Dawkins and Ethan Mitchell , he won the silver medal in the team sprint. He finished 12th in the sprint and 7th in the Keirin. In 2017 , Webster, Mitchell and Dawkins became world champions in the team sprint once again.

In total, Webster won fourteen titles as Oceania champion by 2020 and was New Zealand champion eight times.

Honors

In November 2010, Webster received the Outstanding Young Achiever at the Commonwealth Sports Awards. In 2019 he received a New Zealand Cycling Award .
