The 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games was in 2014 in the Scottish Glasgow aligned. 256 medal events in 17 sports took place over 11 days from July 24th to August 3rd, with the opening ceremony the day before. The 2014 Commonwealth Games were the third in Scotland and the sixth in the United Kingdom .

Application process

Schedule

Applicants had until February 24, 2006 to express their interest in hosting the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). An application fee of £ 60,000 then had to be paid to the CGF. On May 9, 2007, the applicants officially became Candidate Cities and were allowed to use an application logo with the emblem of the Commonwealth Games from that point on. In June and July 2007 the applications were examined by the CGF Evaluation Commission, the results of which were published on September 9, 2007. The vote on the location of the Commonwealth Games 2014 finally took place on November 9, 2007 in Sri Lanka . Glasgow won the election with 47:24 votes against Abuja .

Abuja, Nigeria

The Nigerian capital Abuja was especially score points, the first time the Commonwealth Games in Africa align. Many of the planned sports facilities already existed. Around the national stadium with 60,000 seats there was already a hockey stadium for 4,000 spectators, a velodrome with 3,000 seats, a water sports center for 2,000 and two sports halls with 3,000 and 2,000 seats respectively.

Glasgow, Scotland

Scotland's largest city, Glasgow, wanted to bring the Commonwealth Games to the city for the first time . Most of the planned facilities already existed, only the sports complex National Indoor Sports Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome , a new hall in the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Center (SECC) and the athletes' village had to be rebuilt. Glasgow's application was considered technically advanced.

Halifax, Canada

Halifax had already prevailed in the internal Canadian selection against Hamilton , the York Region and Ottawa in December 2005 and was considered a promising candidate, even because after the 1994 Games there had been no Commonwealth Games in Canada for a longer period of time. After information leaked to the public that the event could cost up to CAD 1.7 billion , the city and province, and a short time later the government in Ottawa, withdrew from the project, which meant that Halifax had to withdraw its candidacy.

Sports and schedule

Ten of the sports played at the games were determined by the CGF, and the organizing committee could choose seven more.

participating countries

A total of 71 nations sent a team to the Commonwealth Games. The Gambia announced on October 6, 2013 that it would not participate.

Sports facilities

The sports facilities of the 20th Commonwealth Games were mostly in three zones within Glasgow. The athletes' village for the approximately 4,500 expected athletes was built in the East End .

South side

The most important facility in the Glasgow South Side Cluster was Hampden Park with 52,500 seats as the venue for the athletics competitions and the closing ceremony. The Ibrox Stadium with a capacity of 50,000 was used as the venue for rugby. The Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike Trails - venue for mountain biking - were also in this zone.

East end

Right next to the athletes' village was the Celtic Park for 60,000 spectators, where the opening ceremony was held. In addition, one of the few newly built facilities was located in the Glasgow East End Cluster : The National Indoor Sports Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome sports complex was the venue for the track bike races (2,500 places) and badminton (5,000 places). The Tollcross International Swimming Center with 5,000 seats as the venue for swimming and the temporary Glasgow Green Hockey Center for field hockey were also part of the East End .

West end

Among other things, the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Center (SECC) Precinct was planned as a venue for boxing, gymnastics, judo, netball, wrestling and weightlifting for the Glasgow West End cluster . The Hydro Arena with 12,500 seats, newly built for the games, was a central component of the Glasgow sports facility concept as a gymnastics venue. Looking at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum was the Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Center Bowls seen. The Scotstoun Sports Campus eventually served as a venue for table tennis and squash.

Other facilities

In addition to the ten sports facilities in the three zones, there were three other facilities. The triathlon took place in Strathclyde Country Park. With the Barry Buddon Shooting Center and the Royal Commonwealth Pool, there were two Commonwealth Games-tested sports facilities in Edinburgh .
