The Regional Municipality of York , also known as the York Region , is a Regional Municipality in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario . The main town and seat of the regional council is Newmarket . The population is 1,032,524 (2011), the area 1762.17 km², which corresponds to a population density of 585.9 inhabitants per km².
York is part of the Greater Toronto Area metropolitan area and the Golden Horseshoe metropolitan area . The regional church is located immediately north of Toronto and south of Lake Simcoe . It was formed in 1971 from parts of the former York County .
