The Sudbury District is an administrative district in the center of the Canadian province of Ontario . The main town is Espanola . The population is 21,196 (2011), the area 40,205.41 km², which corresponds to a population density of 0.5 inhabitants per km². The district was created in 1874 from parts of the Algoma District and the Nipissing District . It encloses the city of Sudbury , which was spun off from the district in 1973.
