Brantford [ ˈbɹænfərd ] is a city in the Canadian province of Ontario . It is enclosed by the County of Brant .
It owes its name to the Mohawk chief Joseph Brant , on whose land it partially stands. In the 2011 census , the city had 93,650 inhabitants. The city owes the nickname The Telephone City to its most famous former citizen, Alexander Graham Bell . The current mayor is Mike Hancock.

The Cockshutt company had been based in Brantford since it was founded in 1877 and had a factory here, which closed in 1985. By 1988, there was a Massey Ferguson factory in town .
