The Regional Municipality of Halton , also known as the Halton Region , is a Regional Municipality in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario . The capital and seat of the regional council is Milton . The population is 501,669 (2006), the area 964.01 km², which corresponds to a population density of 520.4 inhabitants per km².
Halton is part of the Greater Toronto Area metropolitan area and the Golden Horseshoe metropolitan area . The regional church is located west of Toronto in the foothills of the Niagara layer . It was formed in 1974 from parts of the former Halton County , whose main town was Burlington .
