County of Brant is a municipality in the Canadian province of Ontario . Contrary to its name, it has not been a county since 1999 . Brant encloses the town of Brantford .

geography

Brant is centrally located on the peninsula between Lake Huron , Erie and Ontario and is traversed by the Grand River from north to south-east . It is about 300 m above sea level and the terrain is relatively flat.

history

Brant was founded in 1851 from parts of Wentworth and Oxford Counties as a separate county. As part of the major administrative reform in Ontario, the former county town of Brantford was spun off as a one-tier municipality and the rest of the county was also combined as a one-tier municipality.

Brant had 35,638 inhabitants in 12,935 households in 2011 . The share of one-person households was 18%, well below the provincial average of 25%.

The largest town in the municipality is Paris with around 12,000 inhabitants.

The Six Nations of the Grand River is one of the largest Indian reservations in Canada in the area of ​​Brant . Members of all six Iroquois nations, as well as some Lenni Lenape, live here under self-administration. They are also statistically not counted as part of the population.
