The John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport ( IATA : YHM , ICAO : CYHM ) is the airport of the Canadian city of Hamilton .
Runway 12/30 and the apron are also suitable for large intercontinental aircraft. Occasionally, such cargo planes, especially Antonov An-124 and Boeing 747s, can be found at the airport.
Location and transport links
John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport is located eleven kilometers south of downtown Hamilton and 70 kilometers southwest of downtown Toronto. He is near the place Mount Hope, a district of Hamilton. Ontario Highways 6 and 65 run south of the airport. The John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport is integrated into the local public transport system by buses ; Route 20 of the Hamilton Street Railway connects it regularly with the city center of Hamilton.
history
A military airfield called Mount Hope Airport was built on the site in 1940 , which was largely opened for civilian use after the Second World War . In 1964 the military section was finally closed for good.
The city of Hamilton handed over operations to TradePort International Corp. in 1996 . The operating company was completely taken over in 2007 by YVR Airport Services , which operates Vancouver International Airport .
The airport was the East Canadian hub of Westjet Airlines from 2000 to April 2004 ; since 2004 the airline has only offered a few individual routes via this airport. From 2003 to 2005 CanJet operated a few flights from Hamilton, until early 2005 Air Canada Jazz announced that it would also operate the connections. On July 31, 2008, the airline discontinued these routes due to high fuel prices. The airline Flyglobespan , which Hamilton served since May 2007, internally referred to the airport as Toronto Hamilton International Airport .
A former third runway, which ran parallel to 12/30 to the south, has meanwhile been converted into a pure taxiway.
At the end of 2007, the airport operator acquired land in order to extend runway 06/24 to 2,743 m by 2009.
On February 1, 2018, the low-cost airline Swoop , founded by Westjet Airlines, announced that it would use John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport as its operating base in eastern Canada. It began flight operations on June 20, 2018.
Airlines and Destinations
Air Transat , Sunwing Airlines , Swoop and Westjet Airlines fly to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport on scheduled flights. Three of the four destinations in the 2020 summer flight schedule will be served by Swoop, while Westjet Airlines will only serve one destination. In addition, Air Transat and Sunwing Airlines operate flights to the Caribbean in winter . Norwegian Air Shuttle has now operated intercontinental flights to Dublin , but these will be discontinued in September 2019.

Trivia
- The airport briefly became known in January 2006 when a Boeing 707 with the rock band Bon Jovi on board came off the runway.
