history

The Barriefield Military Camp was established by the outbreak of World War I in 1914. However, this was built on the east bank of the Cataraqui River across from Kingston, in the Village of Barriefield. This was located north of Highway 2. The base was named after the Canadian Navy Rear Admiral Sir Robert Barrie, who served in the 1812 war. In 1937 the base was expanded by the Vimy Barracks. The barracks became the new headquarters of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals which were relocated from Borden base . The training facility of the Royal Canadian School of Signals was also moved to the base. Another major expansion came when the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps expanded the base as the largest training facility during World War II . In 1966, the base was renamed the Canadian Forces Base Kingston by the merger of the Canadian armed forces. In 1975 the R oyal Military College of Canada , the National Defense College , the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College, and the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics were located on the base. In 1988 a primary combat unit was activated on the base.
