history

At the height of World War I , the Borden Military Camp, west of Berrie, Ontario, opened in 1916. Soldiers were initially trained on the base to learn how to use military equipment. In 1917 it was expanded to become an airfield and thus a training center for the Royal Canadian Air Force and was accordingly renamed RCAF Station Borden . In 1929 the first aerobatic team, the " Siskins " ( siskins ), was founded at the RCAF station in Borden . In 1938 the base was enlarged in order to be able to settle a tank unit there.

During the Second World War , the base developed into one of the most important education and training centers in Canada, which was used by the Army and the Air Force and operated under the Commonwealth Air Training Plan . The base served as a training center for pilots of the Royal Norwegian Air Force (Norwegian air force) who were trained here.

On February 1, 1968, the Canadian armed forces were restructured. The two site facilities Camp Borden and RCAF Station Borden were regrouped and merged under the name Canadian Forces Base Borden .
