The Department of National Defense ( DND , English ) or, because of the Canadian bilingualism, also Ministère de la Défense nationale ( MDN , French ), is the Ministry of Defense of Canada . The main task of this ministry is to maintain the combat readiness of the military and to defend the country. The office is located in the National Defense Headquarters / Quartier général de la Défense nationale in Ottawa , in the Canadian province of Ontario . 24,000 civilians and around 65,000 active military personnel work for the ministry. In 2011, the Authority's budget amounted to 20.4 billion CAD .

history

The Ministry of Defense began operations on January 1, 1923. With the entry into force of the National Defense Act and the merger with the Department of Naval Services , the Department of Militia and Defense and the Air Board , a ministry was created with which resources could be better deployed. By concentrating and merging administrative tasks, savings potential and tasks could be processed more efficiently. Furthermore, the merger also made it possible to better coordinate the military operations.

The Department of National Defense's administration is divided into two areas within the DND. These are the offices of the Secretary of Defense and the Armed Forces Council.

Armed Forces Council

The Armed Forces Council / Conseil des Forces armées is responsible for formal and operational coordination . The council is made up of senior military officials from each branch of the Canadian armed forces, plus other senior generals. The members of the council include:
