Defense Research and Development Canada ( DRDC , English ) or, because of the Canadian bilingualism, also Recherche et développement pour la défense Canada ( RDDC , French ) is a government research agency of the Canadian Ministry of Defense, the Department of National Defense (DND). She researches new technologies for the Canadian armed forces . The agency employs approximately 1,600 people and has an annual budget of CAD 350 million .

history

During World War II , the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) carried out research for the Department of Defense and the Canadian Armed Forces. After the war, the NRC turned to civil research. The Canadian Ministry of Defense and the armed forces were looking for a way to continue research in the military field and founded the Defense Research Board (DRB) in April 1947 in order to be able to centrally coordinate the research. Through the merger of the Royal Canadian Army , Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force in 1968 to form the Canadian Forces (CF), the Defense Research Board (DRB) was incorporated into the Canadian Forces in 1974 and became the Research and Development Branch (R&B) renamed. On April 1, 2000, the Research and Development Branch (R&B) was reorganized and became an independent authority called Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC) .
