The trolleybus Zwickau was the trolleybus operation of the city of Zwickau , it operated from 1938 to 1977 and supplemented the local tram . The trolleybus served downtown Zwickau, the Weißenborn district and the neighboring communities of Lichtentanne and Stenn .

history

The forerunner of the trolleybus operation was a 3.6 kilometer long bus line opened in 1926 by the Zwickau municipal tram from Weißenborn to Poetenweg, which took about three kilometers in 1927 along Reichenbacher Strasse - today's federal highway 173 - and 1.6 kilometers in 1928 to the "Lichte" inn Fir "was extended. The Energie- und Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Westsachsen, founded in 1929 and which had also taken over the bus route, tried to convert the route to trolleybus operation. On April 2, 1937, she received the concession for the Weißenborn – Poetenweg – Stenn lines . After the overhead line was approved on November 29, 1938, the line was opened on December 1, 1938 with three trolleybuses - one from Daimler-Benz and two from MAN from Nuremberg . The journey time on the 13.14 kilometer route with 32 stops was 41 minutes.

During the Second World War there were efforts to expand the trolleybus operation, so from the end of 1939 the tram line to Wilkau-Haßlau was planned to be converted to a trolleybus. Like the route to Planitz planned in the summer of 1944, this project was not implemented. Since the three vehicles were insufficient during rush hour and omnibuses were used to supplement them, a total of six trailers were procured from the Schumann vehicle construction company in Werdau between 1940 and 1942 . In 1941 another three trolleybuses were delivered by Henschel . The first used single pole contact system of BBC was switched to the conventional two-pole contact system 1,942th

The trolleybus prototype ES6 from nearby Werdau intended for the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVB) in East Berlin was first tested from April 1955 on the Zwickau trolleybus on the Weißenborn – Lichtentanne – Stenn route before moving to Berlin in October of that year Line service went.

Trailer operation ended in 1975. On February 26, 1977, due to construction work on Reichenbacher Strasse, the Poetenweg – Stenn trolleybus service was discontinued. On the remaining stretch of Weißenborn – Poetenweg, the trolleybuses only ran during rush hour, the remaining transport services were taken over by omnibuses. The remaining operation was ended on August 31, 1977 and all remaining vehicles except for a Škoda 9Tr were scrapped. Since a resumption of trolleybus traffic was planned in the future, the overhead line was retained for the time being and the last vehicle was supposed to reduce oxidation on the overhead line through regular trips.
