Planitz is a former town in Saxony , which today belongs to the town of Zwickau in the district of Zwickau . On July 1, 1923, the municipalities of Oberplanitz and Niederplanitz merged to form the municipality of Planitz, which was granted town charter on May 8, 1924. On January 1, 1944, the city of Planitz was incorporated into Zwickau, making Zwickau a major city. Planitz became known throughout Germany through the von Arnimschen coal works and the Planitzer SC football team . Today the districts of Oberplanitz, Niederplanitz and Neuplanitz exist in the district of Zwickau-Süd . The von Arnim aristocratic family from Planitz also owned the Königin-Marien-Hütte in Cainsdorf .

Community structure and geography

Districts of Zwickau

Planitz is divided into the formerly independent communities Nieder- and Oberplanitz . The Zwickau district of Neuplanitz , which was founded in 1973 on the green field, is directly adjacent to Planitz and is located on Niederplanitzer Flur.

The highest elevation in the Planitz area and at the same time the whole of Zwickau is the 403 m high Kreuzberg. Other notable mountains are the Schloßberg and the Alexanderhöhe.

Ober- and Niederplanitz are original row villages along the Planitzbach, which rises on the Kreuzberg, feeds the lido and the escort pond and finally flows into the Zwickauer Mulde in Zwickau .

history

Around 1100 the area was inhabited by Slavs . The name "plaw" comes from them, which means "flowing watercourse" or "Schwemmbach". German farmers moved to the area around 1150. During this time the first castle was built, from which the Planitz Castle emerged in the 15th century . Since the 16th century, a distinction has been made between Oberplanitz (mentioned in 1551) and Niederplanitz (mentioned in 1530). Both places belonged to the manorial estate of the Planitz manor and until 1856 to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Zwickau . In 1856 both places came to the Zwickau court office and in 1875 to the Zwickau administration .

The Planitz earth fire , which started in 1476 due to the spontaneous combustion of coal seams and which could not be extinguished until 1860, became famous . In 1837, Ernst August Geitner founded the "fore gardening on the Planitz earth fires", in which he captured the steam rising at over 70 ° C and used it to heat his greenhouses in which he grew tropical plants. After the fire went out , the nursery was closed. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Niederplanitz was characterized by coal mining in the Zwickau coalfield .

According to the census of December 1, 1900, Ober- and Niederplanitz together had 21,618 inhabitants and 1,029 inhabited buildings with a total area of almost 6.37 km 2 (population density: 3393 inhabitants / km 2  !). After the unification of Ober- and Niederplanitz on July 1, 1923 until it was granted city rights on May 8, 1924, the municipality of Planitz was the largest village in Saxony . In 1935 the Planitz Castle was converted into the town hall. Through an exchange of territory in 1939, the area of the Cainsdorf stop on the Schwarzenberg – Zwickau railway line and a part to the west of the Zwickauer Mulde came from Bockwa to the town of Planitz. On January 1, 1944, Planitz was incorporated into the independent city of Zwickau. As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Planitz came to the Chemnitz district as a district of Zwickau in 1952 (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which existed until 1990. On April 28, 1973, the foundation stone for the Neuplanitz prefabricated housing estate was laid in the western corridor of Niederplanitz . The construction phase lasts until 1981. Neuplanitz is the second largest panel building area in the city of Zwickau after Eckersbach E5.

Since 1990, Planitz, divided into the districts of Ober-, Nieder- and Neuplanitz, has belonged to the independent city of Zwickau in the Free State of Saxony, which has belonged to the Saxon district of Zwickau as a major district town since 2008. After the renovation and restoration in 1991–1993, the Clara-Wieck-Gymnasium , an educational institution with a focus on music , moved into the building of the Planitz Castle .

traffic

From 1907 to 1969 Niederplanitz had its own train station on the Zwickau – Planitz railway line . Initially, the line was only used for freight traffic, after the Second World War, passenger trains also ran. The "Cainsdorf" station on the Schwarzenberg-Zwickau railway line has been in the Planitz area since 1939, due to an exchange of land. For this reason it was called “Planitz-Cainsdorf” between 1940 and 1951.

One of the first Zwickau bus routes ran to Planitz from 1912 to 1914 and then again from 1919 to 1922, and finally from 1924 onwards. Since 2005 Neuplanitz has been the end point of Zwickau tram line 3 from Eckersbach . Bus route 27 also goes through Ober-, Nieder- and Neuplanitz to Marienthal, bus route 10 from Weißenborn / Niederhohndorf / downtown runs partly through Ober- and Niederplanitz, bus route 26 runs from Neuplanitz to Lichtentanne.

The Planitz pyramid.

Pyramid
turning An open-air pyramid has been standing on Oberplanitzer Markt since 1998 . Every year on the first Sunday in Advent it is turned on in a ceremony. Over the years this event has developed more and more into a colorful pre-Christmas hustle and bustle including a one-day Christmas market. The number of visitors also increased from initially a few hundred people to up to 3000 people (as of 2007). The groups of figures in the Planitz pyramid were designed by the Planitz carving association and represent fairytale scenes.

Whitsun Baroque
From 2006 to 2009 this event took place annually on the Whitsun weekend on the Schlossberg in Planitz. It was a mixture of a baroque music festival and a lively representation of court life at that time. The concept envisaged that the Saxon regent would receive a European noble family and their emissaries at the Planitz court. In addition, the event was characterized by colorful contemporary market activity and contemporary military maneuvers. The Sunday fireworks combined with baroque music were a regular highlight of the festival.
