Helke Misselwitz (2009)

Helke Misselwitz (born July 18, 1947 in Zwickau ) is a German director . Since 1991 she has been a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts , Film and Media Art section. From 1997 to 2014 Helke Misselwitz was professor of directing at the Konrad Wolf Academy of Film and Television in Babelsberg .

Professional background

Helke Misselwitz came to film indirectly. After graduating from high school with vocational training as a cabinet maker and training as a physiotherapist at the technical college of the Medical Academy in Erfurt (1966 to 1969), she went to Berlin. She initially worked there as a freelance assistant director and director for television in the GDR . After her permanent position in 1973, she was delegated by the broadcaster to the University of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg, where she studied directing from 1978 to 1982. After completing her studies, she did not return to television, but worked as a freelance writer and director during this time. She earned her living as a cleaner in a train station restaurant and as a supervisor in the SOPHIENSTRASSE 8 gallery. From 1985 to 1988 Misselwitz was a master student with director Heiner Carow at the Academy of Arts of the GDR.

In 1990 she founded one of the first private East German film companies with Thomas Wilkening .
