The Boulevard der Stars is a growing monument near Potsdamer Platz in Berlin . It extends from Potsdamer Platz in the middle of the double-lane Potsdamer Straße to Ben-Gurion-Straße and widens on both sides to individual buildings. Following the example of the Walk of Fame in Los Angeles , celebrities who have achieved outstanding achievements in film and television in German-speaking countries are to be honored with a star. The foundation stone was laid on February 5, 2010 as part of the Berlinale 2010 . On February 12th, the first star was presented in honor of Marlene Dietrich . The boulevard was officially opened on September 10, 2010 with the award of 39 additional stars.

history

Film historian Gero Gandert had the idea for the Boulevard of Stars back in 2002. However, a first competition to design the memorial failed in 2004 due to local conditions. As a result, the framework conditions were modified and selection processes were initially carried out, in which 153 applicants from Germany and mainly from other European countries took part. In February 2009, the Berlin Senate announced a competition to design the future boulevard among the remaining seven participants. The design by the Berlin offices Graft and ART + COM emerged unanimously as the winner. Around one million euros are available for realizing the project; the money comes mainly from EU economic development funds . The non-profit "Boulevard der Stars GmbH", headed by Georgia Tornow , intends to take care of the maintenance costs . The costs are mainly to be covered by donations.

Since the median of Potsdamer Strasse was declared in the city of Berlin's urban development plan for traffic in 2003 as a route clearance for the planned tram route towards the Kulturforum , according to the passenger association IGEB it is therefore a temporary location for the work of art. The urban development plan for traffic , amended on March 29, 2011, provides for the implementation of the construction measures from 2014.

Due to increasing pollution and aesthetic reasons, the square came under fire in 2013:

“The 'Boulevard of Stars' is a panopticon of shabbiness. An unsightly, unkempt piece of median strip that you only enter voluntarily to quickly get to the other side of the street. If this boulevard is advertising, then only for competing film locations. "

In August 2013, those responsible announced that the boulevard would get a new surface. For this reason, the laying of ten new stars was postponed for one year in September 2013. On September 4, 2014, the renovated boulevard was finally reopened and at the same time 20 new stars were inaugurated for 2013 and 2014.

In 2015, there was not enough money from the non-profit organization for an honor. It was not until September 2016 that four more people found their place on the boulevard .

On March 31, 2018, parts of the boulevard were damaged or destroyed in a car accident. The star was recovered damaged by comedian Anke Engelke.

layout

The base of the Boulevard of Stars is a red carpet made of colored asphalt. The individual stars are made of polished bronze and are flush with the carpet ; The name, occupation, dates of life and signature of the person to be honored are engraved on each star. The installed Pepper's Ghost Cameras use an interactive mirror trick to enable visitors to be photographed with their star. Each star is illuminated in the evening by its own small spotlight, the light of which can be varied (for personal reasons, for example).

Selection process and admission requirements

The annual selection of the personalities to be honored is incumbent on a five-member jury, made up of one representative each from the Deutsche Kinemathek Foundation , the German Film Academy , the Federal Cultural Events in Berlin (KBB), the Adolf Grimme Institute and the Film Museum's support group and television . In contrast to the Hollywood Walk of Fame , where anyone can submit nominations, only “organizations and institutions that have been active in the field of film and television for more than three years” can submit candidate proposals. A two-thirds majority in the jury is required to accept a candidate. Every year around seven to ten new personalities are to be honored, partly in spring and partly in autumn.
