Graft (spelling: GRAFT ) is the name for a group of German architects with offices in Germany and abroad. The press called them “trendsetters” and “pop stars of architecture”.

Company history

The architectural office Graft was founded in 1998 by Lars Krückeberg, Wolfram Putz and Thomas Willemeit in Los Angeles . They got to know each other as fellow students in a student choir. The office is active in the areas of urban planning , architecture and design . The architects have had an office in Berlin since 2001 and, together with founding partner Gregor Hoheisel, another in Beijing since 2004 . The company currently employs around 150 people. So far around 100 projects have been planned and implemented worldwide. The orders vary “from the children's dentist's practice to the high-rise, from the hand wash basin to the city district”. Graft is known in Germany, among other things, for the multi-award-winning design hotel “Hotel Q” on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. With the “Tor 149” project, the office built its first apartment building in Berlin in summer 2012. The long-term collaboration with the actor Brad Pitt , among others as co-initiator and design curator of the Make It Right Foundation , contributed significantly to the awareness of the planning office among the general public. On August 16, 2017, Federal Building Minister Barbara Hendricks appointed the team of architects and Marianne Birthler as curators for the German contribution to the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale in order to realize the Unbuilding Walls exhibition .

Graft is characterized by its experimental and interdisciplinary design practice and its avant-garde design language. According to the company's own statements, the design philosophy is based on the grafting method taken from botany . In this process, the positive properties of two genetically diverse plants are combined in a new type of hybrid.
