Library cover

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Library Binding is called book covers , from a library commissioned or in a separate bindery for books of their own portfolio were made.

The following reasons can lead to the production of a library binding:

  • A brochure or a single book block needs a firm cover.
  • An original book cover is defective and cannot or should no longer be restored or repaired.
  • A library should be given a uniform appearance. This is especially true for baroque libraries and is no longer common today.

Modern library covers are simply designed. The focus is mostly on aspects of usability and economy, less aesthetic or book historical considerations. The original hard covers are lost, they are "tied". In the case of brochures, the cover boxes are hung in, the spine is not preserved. In the 19th century were mostly half-linen or - half leather volumes in conjunction with colored papers mostly marble papers prepared. Today mostly simple fabric bindings are made from library linen , for example "Herford" or " Buckram " library linen. Simple cardboard covers are also possible; these are cheaper but less durable. It is also possible to simply cover the cover with adhesive film. The disadvantage of this variant is that the original state can usually only be restored with greater effort. The adhesive of the film can change over long periods of time, i.e. it can discolor or become brittle. For this reason, the pasting is only used in library holdings that are used temporarily.

In order to prevent the loss of historical material, restorations and repairs are increasingly being carried out on historical book stocks. Packing in a protective cardboard box is also an alternative.
