Historical book worth protecting in a slipcase

A slip case or protective box (ger .: slipcase) is a five-sealed protective container, fit one or more in the books , magazines , brochures and the like are stored. If several copies are kept in a slipcase, it is called a collective slipcase . A book is inserted into a slipcase so that only the spine is visible. This protects the book from the outside, but the title on the spine can still be read.

Manufacturing

Slip cases are usually made of cardboard or strong cardboard and are then more or less lavishly decorated. In the case of special, valuable books, it can also happen that the protective cardboard is provided with a cover that also protects the back of the book.

Use

A slipcase is not only used to embellish or protect a book, but is also used for advertising purposes. It offers additional space to draw attention to the book, but also to advertise the publisher or manufacturer . Often special editions , collections or anniversary editions of books are sold in cases, but digital media such as DVDs or CDs are also often sold in cases. Sliders that are closed on four sides, i.e. those with an open front and back, are referred to as O-Cards .

Specialty

Experts use the term slipcase only for the protective boxes of bibliophile books. In this case, the slipcase is “lined with velvet or colored paper in a bibliophile manner , covered with special fabrics (possibly parchment ) and provided with leather edges on the open side ."
