There is a large number of prizes that have been named Innovation Prize . What they have in common is that innovations should be stimulated and recognized. Most of these prizes are awarded by the German federal states, but the non-profit German Institute for Invention and the innovative "Der Deutsche Innovationspreis" also award innovation prizes.

Innovation prizes of the countries

Baden-Württemberg

At the suggestion of the Minister for Economics, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Technology, Rudolf Eberle , the state government decided on October 22, 1984 to award an innovation prize to small and medium-sized companies.

The prize has been awarded annually since 1985 to small and medium-sized companies from industry, trade and technological services based in the country for exemplary performance in the development of new products, processes and technological services or in the application of modern technologies in products, production or services. Prize money totaling 50,000 euros and certificates will be awarded.

Bavaria

The Bavarian State Government has been awarding the Bavarian Innovation Prize every two years since 1996 . A company, team, inventor or company founder is to be awarded for an outstanding, practice-oriented innovative performance that has an impact on the Bavarian economy and its competitiveness. With the award, the Bavarian State Government wants to point out outstanding achievements and raise awareness that the high economic, social and ecological standard can only be maintained through innovative achievements and creativity.

The award has been known as the Bavaria Innovation Prize since 2012 . A total of up to 7 main and special prizes will be awarded. These are non-material awards that are not financially endowed. The prize consists of a certificate and a sculpture.

Berlin Brandenburg

Since 1984, the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Women has awarded the Berlin-Brandenburg Innovation Prize to the most outstanding product developments, services and concepts from regional companies . The prize has been awarded jointly with the Brandenburg Ministry of Economics and Energy since 1992. The innovation award is endowed with € 10,000 per winner and is financed as part of a “public-private partnership”. It is awarded to up to five nominees annually.

Brandenburg

Outstanding innovations and the actors behind them have been honored with the Brandenburg Innovation Prize since 2014 . The Brandenburg Innovation Prize is endowed with up to 10,000 euros per cluster. It can be awarded to a maximum of three award winners per cluster. In this case the price will be split equally.

Hesse

The Hessen Innovation Prize last honored innovations in entrepreneurial processes in 2008. He was u. a. supported by the Bankenverband Hessen eV, DZ BANK AG and Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen . The patron was the Hessian Minister for Economy, Transport and State Development Alois Rhiel . The prize was endowed with a total of € 30,000.

As of 2011, an "Innovation" category will be introduced in the Hessen Champions competition instead .

Hamburg

Innovation award from the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . (has not been awarded for years)

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Since 2013, the INNO AWARD has been awarded here annually by the VTMV - Association of Technology Centers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, together with partners from business. The INNO AWARD is aimed primarily at those who are willing to set up or just founded companies with innovative products, processes or services, is open to all sectors and applies nationwide. The prize is endowed with a total of € 18,000.

North Rhine-Westphalia

Since 2008, the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia has awarded an innovation prize in the three categories of honorary prize (life's work until 2010), innovation and young talent. The innovation award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is the second most valuable innovation award in Germany - after the future award of the Federal President .

The prize is endowed with 150,000 euros:

  • Innovation category - 100,000 euros in prize money
  • Young talent category - 50,000 euros in prize money
  • Honorary Prize category - no prize money.

The award sculpture was created for the state by Markus Lüpertz , former rector of the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

Rhineland-Palatinate

The innovation prize of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate has been awarded since 1988.

Saxony

The Innovation Prize of the Free State of Saxony has been awarded since 1991 for outstanding performance in the development and implementation of economically successful, new products, services or processes. In addition to the sculpture for the winner, the prize consists of a sum of money, a certificate and a sticker to identify the award-winning products. By 2009, more than 65 companies had received awards.

Thuringia

The competition for the Thuringia Innovation Prize has been held since 1994 and is intended to emphasize the economic importance of sustainable innovations, especially for small and medium-sized companies in the commercial sector. Joint sponsors of the competition are the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Thuringia Foundation for Technology, Innovation and Research (STIFT), TÜV Thuringia and the Ernst Abbe Foundation.

participation

Entitled to participate are companies, sole proprietorships, individuals, craft businesses, research institutions and universities based or operating in Thuringia that have demonstrably developed innovative products, processes and services whose (possibly timely) production or exploitation can be proven. The developments submitted meet this requirement if they have been launched on the market at the time of application and were launched no more than two years ago or are about to be launched on the market and have the prospect of being successfully established. The subject of the application must have been developed, designed and / or manufactured predominantly in Thuringia.

Prize money and categories

The Thuringia Innovation Prize is endowed with prize money totaling € 100,000 and is awarded in the categories “Tradition & Future”, “Industry & Material”, “Communication & Media” and “Light & Life”. The jury can also award a “special prize for young companies”, which is to be understood as recognition and motivation and is intended to support young companies in their further development. An independent jury made up of experts from business and science will decide on the award of the prize and the amount of the prize money. In addition to these categories, the sponsors award the Ernst Abbe Prize for innovative entrepreneurship , with which Thuringian entrepreneurs are honored for special services to the science and technology location Thuringia.

General innovation awards

The diesel medal

The Diesel Medal was launched on the initiative of Eugen Diesel , Rudolf Diesel's son in 1953, making it Germany's oldest innovation award. The Diesel Medal is awarded by the non-profit German Institute for Invention (DIE eV). One of the goals of DIE eV is to adequately appreciate the achievements of inventors and entrepreneurs in public and to consistently support their work. The award sends out a signal to the entire economy and puts the subject of innovation in the focus of public interest.

The panel of experts selects a winner from a total of 16 nominations in the categories “Best Innovation Performance”, “Most Sustainable Innovation Performance”, “Best Media Communication” and “Best Innovation Promotion”. The announcement and presentation of the 16 nominations always takes place in early summer.

The gold diesel medal is traditionally awarded in the hall of honor of the Deutsches Museum in front of around 200 invited guests and media representatives.

The German Innovation Award

Accenture , EnBW , Evonik and WirtschaftsWoche have joined forces to create the German Innovation Prize initiative to honor outstanding, future- oriented innovations by German companies that change business and markets with their innovative strength. Product innovations, innovative business models, processes and services as well as organizational and marketing innovations are taken into account. The prize is awarded annually.

The 2010 award winner in the large company category was Schott AG with its environmentally friendly glass ceramic cooktop. In the medium-sized company category, DMG Dental Material Gesellschaft won with a novel treatment method for caries infiltration. The 2010 award winner in the start-up category was smartfiber AG with an innovation in the process of dissolving cellulose fibers.

The 2011 award winner in the large company category was Freudenberg Dichtungs- und Schwingungstechnik GmbH & Co. KG for the development of a waste-free production process for seals. The 2011 award winner in the medium-sized company category was Carl Zeiss Meditec AG for radiation therapy for breast cancer patients. The winner in the start-up company category was Human Machine Intelligence GmbH for a software development in the field of so-called artificial intelligence that improves the understanding of speech by computers.

The 2012 award winner in the Large Company category was SAP AG for its new database technology SAP HANA . The 2012 winner in the medium-sized company category was Häussler Innovation GmbH - Kempten with a new type of rebar for the installation of steel grids for heavily loaded areas. The 2012 award winner in the start-up company category was NanoTemper Technologies GmbH - Munich with Microscale Thermophoresis, a measuring method for the effectiveness of drugs.

The 2016 award winner in the large company category was the Schaeffler Group for a car seat with electromechanical roll stabilization. The 2016 award winner in the medium-sized company category was Invenio for simulation software for car prototypes. The 2016 award winner in the start-up company category was 3YourMind for an online platform that provides an overview of various 3D printing processes.

The 2020 award winner in the medium- sized company category was VARTA AG for a new technology to increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries.

German Business Innovation Prize

The innovation award of the German economy has been awarded annually since 1980, making it the oldest award of its kind worldwide. The FAZ group is organizing the innovation award.
