HANA (formerly English H igh performance to alytic A ppliance , high-performance analysis application ' ) is a development and integration platform of SAP software applications that the core of a relational database management system is (RDBMS) and OLAP - and OLTP -Landscapes in a common In -Memory database combined. It was originally an appliance ; H. a combination of hardware and software that uses in-memory technology to store the data in the computer's main memory, which can be accessed much faster than the hard drive . Compared to conventional applications, it enables evaluations of large amounts of data with higher performance . Today, SAP HANA can be used with various hardware and also virtualized .

history

The architecture of SAP HANA was developed by SAP in 2008 in cooperation with the Hasso Plattner Institute and Stanford University for the real-time analysis of large amounts of data. Former SAP board member Vishal Sikka called it “ Hasso's New Architecture ” in a blog . Before the name "HANA" caught on, the application was also referred to as "SanssouciDB" or "NewDB" in various publications. SAP HANA was first presented in spring 2010 and was implemented from November of the same year. Originally only available as an appliance, SAP HANA has now been further developed into a platform for all SAP business applications that support in-memory technology and can also be installed on the customer's own hardware.

On January 10, 2013, SAP announced that the core applications of the SAP Business Suite based on HANA are available.

In 2015, SAP presented the first product, SAP S / 4HANA , which is based entirely on the simplified data model of SAP HANA. The product had been sold 5,400 times by the end of the year.

In 2016, HANA Express, a free edition for testing and developing productive applications with up to 32 GB of memory, was released. Use with additional storage is possible for a surcharge. In addition, that year SAP BW / 4HANA appeared as the successor to SAP BW and version 2.0 of the database.

Procedure

With SAP HANA, different technologies are combined in both software and hardware. On the software side, a hybrid of the column-oriented working method that is common in in-memory databases and the conventional line-oriented database technology that is widespread in relational databases is used.

A key feature of SAP HANA is its consistent design as an in-memory platform, i.e. H. As is usually the case with databases, data for analysis or processing are not copied from a hard drive to the main memory, but are kept there in full. This enables the implementation of transactional ( OLTP ) and analytical procedures ( OLAP ) in the same system and the processing and analysis of large amounts of data ( Big Data ) in almost real time.

In some cases, these processes enable significant performance advantages and business processes that were not possible with previous database technologies. Since 2014, SAP has also offered the SAP HANA platform in a company's own cloud environment; mixed operation (hybrid) is also possible. The SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud enables companies to use corporate applications such as ERP , CRM , BI etc. as so-called Managed Services ( SaaS ), based on SAP HANA as an in-memory database platform.

The SAP HANA Cloud Platform includes extensive in-memory application and database services ( PaaS ). It enables companies to create extensions for applications themselves or to consume them from partners.

use

The appliance, which was developed for business intelligence and business analytics applications, was initially used in the SAP Business Warehouse and in Business Objects Strategic Workforce Planning . However, according to the manufacturer, it is also possible to operate other applications with HANA. In addition to other SAP products, this includes all SQL- based applications. On January 10, 2013, SAP announced the availability of the entire SAP Business Suite on HANA . From then on, SAP HANA was gradually developed into an open platform and supplemented with functions for text analysis , data mining and geodata .

Application server

In addition to the database, Hana provides the SAP HANA XSA (HANA XS Advanced) service, an option for programming native Hana applications. From version 2.04, programming with server-side JavaScript, Java and Python is possible on XSA.

similar products

The Exalytics In-Memory Machine introduced by Oracle in 2011 also uses in-memory technology. Since July 2014, Oracle has also been offering a so-called “in-memory” option for database version 12c.

From version 10.5, column-oriented data management and in-memory technology are also available for the DB2 database from IBM with the technology called BLU Acceleration.

In contrast to these two products, which replicate data from the hard drive to their main memory for in-memory operation, SAP HANA has a pure in-memory database . See the In-Memory Database article for many other similar products.
