The standard EN 14142 is one of the standards for the standardization of postal services. The smallest, meaningful elements of postal addresses are recorded , and a possible structure of address databases is described. In addition, country-specific templates are defined that ensure that the postal address is correctly displayed for the respective destination country for postal delivery.

The norm is in two parts. Part 1 of the standard describes the possible components of a postal address and is based on Part A of the two-part standard UPU-S42-6, which is published by the Universal Postal Union . Part 2 of the standard describes the country-specific templates that are used to generate a valid address representation for the respective destination country of the delivery from the components of an address according to Part 1. Part 2 is currently available as draft CEN / TR 14142-2: 2011 (as of January 2012).

The problem that currently stands in the way of simple storage and automated processing of address data is that addressing practices have grown over time and sometimes differ significantly in different countries. The specific meaning of the individual elements of a postal address can generally only be understood through their positioning in the layout. However, this is not necessarily uniform; abbreviations can also be used, e.g. B. Landstr. instead of country roads in Germany or RR instead of rural roads in the US, which creates additional problems. In order to correctly interpret a postal address, detailed knowledge of the respective conventions and permitted forms of representation, as well as tolerable deviations from these, is essential. The aim of the standard is therefore to create a universal address model whose elements have a clearly defined meaning and which abstracts from the respective form of representation of the address. This abstracted data model can then be used in conjunction with a display rule in order to output a postal address correctly formatted for the respective destination country.
