SAP S / 4HANA is the successor to the previous core product from SAP SE . The S stands for simple , the 4 for the fourth product generation and HANA for the underlying database technology.

use

With SAP S / 4HANA, SAP is expanding the existing ERP software product line, which covers all everyday processes in a company. The ERP software offers both day-to-day business functions and industrial solutions. The typical SAP products are also included (SAP SRM, SAP CRM and SAP SCM).

Certain central functions are already included in the digital core of SAP S / 4HANA. Other functions are available as LoB Solutions (Line of Business Solutions). These solutions offer an additional range of functions. But they have to be licensed and installed separately.

The new SAP Business Suite 4 uses the new SAP HANA database. Hence the name of the product, SAP S / 4HANA. In contrast, the previous SAP R / 3 solutions also support databases from Oracle , Microsoft and IBM .

history

The SAP S / 4HANA release took place on February 3, 2015 on the New York Stock Exchange . Were presented this cloud and - on-premise solutions. Cloud solutions were made available at SAPPHIRE (SAP's annual customer conference) on May 6, 2015 in Orlando, Florida.

SAP S / 4HANA is one of the biggest updates in the SAP ERP world in terms of platform and strategy. Gartner analysts spoke of the biggest "leap" after the release of SAP S / 4HANA. At the same time, however, the functionality, availability, pricing and migration around SAP S / 4HANA were also questioned.

By April 21, 2015, the product had been sold 370 times, in the third quarter of 2015 the number rose to 1,300. There were 3,180 implementations by the end of 2019. According to SAP, around 14,100 customers had chosen SAP S / 4HANA by May 2020.

Competitive products for SAP HANA in the " Software as a Service " (SaaS) area are offered by the large software houses Oracle , Microsoft and Workday Inc.

Versions

SAP S / 4HANA exists in two versions, On-Premises and Cloud. There is also the option of using SAP S / 4HANA in the form of a hybrid operating model (parts on-premise, parts in the cloud).

There are currently four different options in the product family:

  • SAP S / 4HANA Cloud, essentials edition (SAP S / 4HANA Cloud ES): formerly Multi-Tenant-Edition (MTE) or Public Cloud
  • SAP S / 4HANA Cloud, extended edition (SAP S / 4HANA Cloud EX): formerly Single-Tenant Edition (STE) or Private Cloud
  • SAP S / 4HANA AnyPremise Private Cloud, managed by SAP (HANA Enterprise Cloud, HEC)
  • SAP S / 4HANA AnyPremise: managed on site or by cloud providers (hyperscalers)

The Cloud ES is available for specific industries and 42 countries; the Cloud EX offers the same range of functions as the on-premise solution and is available for 64 countries, in 39 languages ​​and for 25 industries.

The cloud version was released on February 8, 2017. With this product, SAP has officially confirmed and promoted the cloud strategy.

Integration into the company

SAP S / 4HANA can be integrated into the company in different ways: on-premise, as a cloud solution or as a hybrid variant in different use cases.

SAP S / 4HANA offers different types of integration (new implementation, system conversion and selective migration). The right choice always depends on the customer's starting point. Various criteria must be taken into account. These include system-technical and organizational influencing factors such as the company's strategic goals, costs, the complexity of implementation or the organization's willingness to take risks.

  • New Implementation: Also known as the Green Field Approach . This means the migration from a non-SAP system or another ERP system to a SAP system. This process requires an initial data loading process. The aim is to migrate the master and transaction data from the old system to the new SAP system. With the greenfield approach, the new implementation is always close to the SAP standard and best practices.
  • System Conversion: Also known as the brown field approach. In this scenario, the customer is already using the SAP Business Suite and would like to bring it to the new SAP S / 4 HANA release. From a technical point of view, the Software Update Manager (SUM) with the data migration option (DMO) provides support.
  • Selective data transformation (selective migration, formerly: landscape transformation): There are SAP data management and landscape transformation (DMLT) tools and services for the selective transfer of configuration and data from the previous ERP system to SAP S / 4HANA Instance. Several ERP solutions can be merged.

Product life cycle

Both versions of SAP S / 4HANA - on-premise and the cloud solution - follow a quarterly update strategy. A new cloud release is made available every quarter, with a new release only being available once a year for the on-premise variant. For this purpose, Feature Pack Stacks (FPS) and / or Service Pack Stacks (SPS) are released here every quarter.

On-premise: new product version every year (e.g. SAP S / 4HANA 1610), followed by three FPS - one per quarter. If a new product follows, the PLCs for the previous versions are retained every quarter (until the end of the support). Technically, an FPS is similar in content to the PLC; however, the FPS contains fewer groundbreaking innovations. The numbering is ascending - an FPS3 is followed by a SPS4. The first FPS was published by SAP for SAP S / 4HANA 1610 on February 22, 2017.

Cloud: SAP offers a quarterly update for the cloud solution for all productive customers. The updates can contain new business functions and / or bug fixes. Small additions or bug fixes are delivered in bug fixes or patches .

End of maintenance

In February 2020, Christian Klein , co-CEO of SAP, gave the customer a maintenance commitment for S / 4HANA until the end of 2040.
