The German Institute for Invention (DIE) is a non-profit association for the promotion and support of invention in Germany. One area of ​​activity of the DIE is the annual awarding of the Diesel Medal to personalities from business, science and technology.

The association attaches decisive importance to inventions and innovations for prosperity, economic growth and the improvement of the quality of life in Germany. The DIE promotes cross-sector networking as well as dialogue and exchange between different sectors, disciplines, practice and science. One of the goals of the DIE is to honor these innovative successes.

Compared to the natural and technical sciences, innovation management , inventions and the associated management of intellectual property ( IP management ) are still young academic disciplines and fields of practice. At the same time, the economic and technological events in which entrepreneurial activities are embedded are becoming more and more dynamic. The DIE supports the further development of invention and innovation management as well as the recommendation and communication of knowledge and experience.

The German Institute for Invention is independent and non-partisan when it comes to implementing its tasks and achieving its goals.

  • Publication of position papers to support economic and political decision-makers with the aim of improving the innovation culture in Germany
  • Operation of the open innovation platform Dieselmedaille for the best future idea to promote talented students, graduates and doctoral candidates in technical and natural science subjects

The association is divided into various departments and bodies in order to carry out its tasks.

The Diesel Medal Department organizes the presentation of the award and accompanies the nomination and election process. The nomination is made by the technical-scientific advisory board, which is made up of representatives of German technology associations and institutions, chaired by Dieter Spath , President of the German Academy of Engineering Sciences. The electoral body for the diesel medal is the Diesel Board of Trustees, which consists of over 50 technical board members from medium-sized industrial companies who have entrepreneurial responsibility. The advisory board supports the board of trustees with expertise on technology potential and innovation systems. The dean's office of the Diesel Board of Trustees provides the thematic guidelines for the research program for the Diesel Medal and represents the Diesel Board of Trustees in public. The Dean's Office is made up of selected members of the Diesel Board of Trustees. Membership in the Diesel Board of Trustees is only possible through co-optation .

The Diesel Medal Forum department organizes and accompanies the CTO Forum series of events, in which the Diesel Board of Trustees meets with invited guests and exchanges ideas on innovation topics. The CTO forums focus on various current topics and have the motto: The CTO is responsible for the company's technical vision. The Diesel Medal Forum department also organizes the Graduate College with its mentoring program and the Corporate University on IP management.

The Diesel Medal Best Future Idea department organizes the Open Innovation competition and the presentation of the award.

history

In 1952 the German Inventors' Association (DEV) was founded in Nuremberg. On September 24, 1952, in the presence of Eugen Diesel , a son of Rudolf Diesel , the founding members announced the foundation of the Rudolf Diesel Medal , which has been awarded every several years since then.

On July 5, 1969, the German Institute for Invention e. V. founded in Nuremberg. Wilhelm Stürmer, who held this office until November 1978, was elected chairman. Ulrich Poppe succeeded him as the new chairman on October 1, 1979.

On May 22, 1982 the general assembly elected the President of the German Patent and Trademark Office , Erich Häußer , as the new chairman. In 1993, Heinz Hölter added to the executive board and formed a dual leadership with Häusser. In 1996 Wilhelm Helger was appointed to the board.

In August 2000 Erich Häußer and Wilhelm Helger left the board. Then Norbert Haugg, former presiding judge at the Federal Patent Court and President of the German Patent and Trademark Office, took over the board.

Heinz Hölter was followed by Viktor Dulger and Hans Rump in 2002 . After the death of Hans Rump in 2006, Paul-Alexander Wacker added to the board.

In 2009 the general assembly elected Alexander Wurzer and Heiner Pollert, who formed the board together with Paul-Alexander Wacker until the end of 2010. Since December 2010, the board has consisted of Alexander Wurzer, Heiner Pollert and Manfred columnsberger.

In 2011, the new Board of Directors shortened the biennial cycle of awarding the Rudolf Diesel Medal to one year.

On November 29, 2013, the diesel medal celebrated its 60th anniversary.

On April 13, 2018, the 65th anniversary was celebrated in the hall of honor of the Deutsches Museum .
