The Oskar Patzelt Foundation is a foundation that has existed since 1998 and, according to its own account, is dedicated to promoting education as well as popular and vocational training.

The founder is Helfried Schmidt . After several years of legal dispute with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills , the foundation was named after Oskar Patzelt (* 1919), the founder's father-in-law. He worked as chief physician for internal medicine in the Wurzen district hospital . According to its motto “ Before the therapy, the gods make the diagnosis ”, which emphasizes above all the connection between entrepreneurship and market analysis, the foundation, as an NGO and NPO, annually praises the business award “Großer Preis des Mittelstandes” . For this social commitment, the two board members Helfried Schmidt and Petra Tröger received the Federal Order of Merit in 2008 and 2016 respectively . The foundation has been working with Impulse magazine since 2016 . The foundation has also been cooperating with the Wirtschaftsjunioren Germany since 2016 . The main media partner of the 25th competition year in 2019 is the FAZ-Group magazine Markt und Mittelstand .

Organization and impact

Nationwide, more than 200 people work on a voluntary basis in the committees of the Oskar Patzelt Foundation: Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Ambassadors, Advisory Boards, around 50 regional service points and 13 juries with a total of around 100 jurors. The executive committee of the foundation includes Wolfgang Böhmer , Ralf Christoffers , Wolfgang Reinhart and Dagmar Schipanski , among others . To finance the total annual performance of around 1.8 million euros, neither participation nor processing fees are charged, nor are government grants or tax-deductible donations used. The entire foundation's work is organized entirely on a voluntary basis and privately financed.

Since 2002 the competition "Grand Prize for Medium-Sized Enterprises" has been advertised nationwide. Although nobody is allowed to apply themselves, the competition with almost 5,000 nominated companies has been Germany's most popular business competition for years. It triggered nationwide effects and imitations. The IHK Bonn has created a regional "Ludwig" in cooperation with the Oskar Patzelt Foundation. Many other competitions, such as the company award of the Sächsische Zeitung or MUT - Mittelstand und Thüringen - the entrepreneurial competition of the Thuringian daily newspapers, have clearly based their tender and evaluation criteria on the templates of the Oskar Patzelt Foundation. Die Welt wrote in 2009: “The 'Grand Prize for Medium-Sized Enterprises' awarded by the Oskar Patzelt Foundation is the most coveted business award in Germany.” The Oskar Patzelt Foundation has also had an impact on Tatort and other television programs and textbooks. "The" Great Price of Medium-Sized Enterprises "is a figurehead for the respected brand" Made in Germany "," said the Brandenburg Minister for Economic Affairs, Albrecht Gerber .

The PT magazine

The PT magazine - for business and society was created in 2005 from a previous regional paper. In addition to the online presence, the print medium appears six times a year and is distributed nationwide with a circulation of 40,000 . The magazine is the official magazine of the competition Grand Prix of the middle class and devoted not only to economic and business topics including future and already excellent P rice T rägern.

Litigation over the name of the prize

Until 2005, the foundation awarded the OSKAR prize for medium-sized companies . The name OSKAR was registered as a trademark with the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) in 1996 . As early as 1997 there were disagreements with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which is known for receiving the Academy Award ( Oscar ). The Academy sued the foundation because of the fear of confusion. The legal dispute lasted seven years and ended after an out-of-court agreement in February 2005, as a result of which the business award was renamed the Grand Prix of the Middle Class.
