Werner Wenning (born October 21, 1946 in Opladen , today in Leverkusen ) is a German manager . He was CEO of Bayer AG from 2002 to 2010 and has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board since October 1, 2012. From April 30, 2008 to June 7, 2016, he was also a member of the E.ON AG Supervisory Board . Wenning is also chairman of the shareholders' committee of Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH.

Life

Werner Wenning began an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk at Bayer AG on April 1, 1966 after completing a commercial college, and then completed a trainee program in finance and accounting. After working in corporate auditing in 1969, he became Head of Accounting at Bayer Industrial SA in Lima , Peru in 1970 . In 1975 he was employed in the central group audit department and in 1978 he was appointed managing director of Bayer Industrial SA in Lima. In 1983 he took over the management of the Health Sector department, in 1986 head of thermoplastics sales, and in 1987 head of plastics sales. After working for the Treuhandanstalt , he became Managing Director of Bayer Hispania Industrial SA and Spokesman for Spain in 1992. In April 1996 he became head of corporate planning.

On February 1, 1997, Wenning became the successor to Chief Financial Officer Helmut Loehr and Chairman of the Board of Management on April 26, 2002 as the successor to Manfred Schneider , who moved to the Supervisory Board. Wenning played a major role in the restructuring of the Bayer Group in 2003. He was the initiator of the takeover of Schering AG by Bayer in 2006.

Wenning is a member of the Association of Catholic Entrepreneurs and was involved as Vice President of the Association of the Chemical Industry from 2002 to 2005 and from 2007 to 2011 ; from September 2005 to September 2007 he was its president. He is a member of the supervisory boards of Siemens AG (since January 23, 2013) and of Henkel KGaA (since September 16, 2013) and was a member of the supervisory boards of Evonik Industries AG (until 2008) and Deutsche Bank AG (2008 to 2013).

In August 2010 Wenning positioned itself as one of 40 signatories of the Energy Policy Appeal , a lobbying initiative of the four major electricity companies to promote the extension of the service life of German nuclear power plants.

On October 1, 2010, he resigned his position as CEO of Bayer AG. His successor was Marijn Dekkers until April 2016 . With effect from October 1, 2012, Wenning was appointed as the successor to Manfred Schneider as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bayer AG. On May 5, 2011, Wenning was elected chairman of the supervisory board by the shareholders of E.ON AG. He replaced Ulrich Hartmann and held his mandate until June 7, 2016.

Wenning has been Chairman of the Shareholders' Committee of Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH since December 3, 2010 . Wenning is married, has two grown daughters and lives in his place of birth, Leverkusen-Opladen.

On February 26, 2020 Bayer announced that Wenning will be replaced early by an independent member of the Supervisory Board, Norbert Winkeljohann, at the 2020 Annual General Meeting. The Handelsblatt sees this as a first signal to investors.
