Werner Wenning (diplomat)

Werner Wenning (born July 16, 1914 in Berlin ; † August 4, 1986 ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to the People's Republic of Bulgaria .

Life

Wenning, the son of a worker, attended elementary and high school. From 1928 to 1932 he learned the trade of a locksmith . After completing his apprenticeship, he became unemployed and worked, with interruptions, as an unskilled worker, travel agent and cashier. In 1932 he became a member of the Fichte sports club , the Red Aid and the KPD . From 1936 to 1945 he worked as a locksmith and foreman in his profession.

After the Second World War in 1945 he took part in the development of the Berlin-Waidmannslust local administration . He became deputy district head, later secretary to the district mayor of Reinickendorf and an employee of the Berlin magistrate . He joined the SED , the FDGB and the DSF . Wenning studied social sciences at the University of Leipzig from 1947 to 1949 .

On January 1, 1950, he joined the diplomatic service of the GDR. After working in the protocol department, he became deputy head of department at the beginning of 1952 and, on September 1, 1952, head of the Political and Economic Organization sub-department of Main Department II in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). Between 1958 and 1963 he completed a distance learning course at the German Academy for Political Science and Law , which he graduated with a degree in political science . From 1959 to 1962 he was counselor at the GDR embassy in Beijing . From 1963 to 1970 he headed the Southeastern Europe department at the MfAA and was then the GDR's ambassador in Sofia from October 1970 to 1975 .

From 1976 he was secretary of the GDR committee for the decade of struggle against racism and racial discrimination.
